Let’s exclude the most promiscuous 10% of women and maybe the 20% most restricted to get the 70% in the “middle.” Her more primitive instincts might be telling her to fuck a higher value man but her conscious brain is saying that it would be so wonderful to get his commitment (which if he truly is higher value then it would be for her, assuming he really loved her and so forth). Also, due to little fear of hunger or death, that portion of her brain that will trigger REAL attraction towards provider/protectors that will stick around is not there. Her brain has perceived that the environment is safer and rich and so it interprets that by sending more “be picky” signals, “fuck upwards.” However, women do bring all the evolutionary programming of it being necessary or advantageous to having a committed relationship so they do still WANT that (as you say, they don’t need it per se anymore) but their attraction triggers are less responsive to the guy at their level and more attuned to being pushed by higher value men.
